In a world that tries to serve us absolute truths, it’s important to embrace multiplicity.

It is true that atrocities are committed by our governments, and we should not turn a blind eye to the damage done in the name of our freedom
AND
Our brains and bodies are not meant to hold the sheer volume of information presented to us by media outlets about tragedies happening across the globe
AND
Being aware of how our society functions and how politics plays out in real life — seeing through propaganda — is a critical part of self-awareness
AND
Burning out from a constant state of distress means we cannot connect with the communities that actually need us most in the local times and spaces where our energy is needed
AND
Capitalism leaves us burned out and broken from selling our alienated labour for money so we can spend it on the basic necessities of life
AND
Finding joy in existence is incredibly important, because if we can’t find joy, what’s the fucking point? Art, music, whimsy, connection with nature — these are simultaneously privileged activities in times of crisis and essential practices of being human
AND
While it may seem that the world is burning more furiously than it ever has before, the reality is that many moments in history have burned just as brightly when people were paying attention. This moment is not unique
AND
The climate crisis is presenting a picture of devastating biodiversity loss, crop failure, drought, and extreme weather that will likely continue to worsen.

If you are struggling to hold all of this at the same time, you are not alone. Some days I feel like I’m coming apart at the seams. On those days, I try to remember to be soft and light and utterly human. Because the only way to hold all of this is to accept that all of it is true at the same time.
